2017 Has Been The Most Disappointing Season for NY Giants and Mets Fans of All-Time

The New York Giants and Mets had the most disappointing season in their respective franchise’s history in 2017. It’s never been a worse time to support these two teams.

Someone one Reddit asked if 2017 was the most disappointing season for the Mets. Some replied with the 2007 and 2008 meltdowns. I responded with this:

“Lot of people talking about 2007 and 2008 as “disappointing”. That’s not the word I’d use. Heart-wrenching, soul-crushing, back-breaking – those would describe the collapses. 2017 was definitely the most disappointing.

We were considered World Series contenders pre-season. We had the top pitching rotation in baseball, an above average 1-2 punch in the bullpen, and bats on bats on bats. And we were done by August.
Picture what your parents would say… “I’m not mad… just disappointed.” That’s the 2017 season in one line.

The ’85, ’87, ’90, and ’84 Mets all had 90+ wins and missed the playoffs. That’s gotta sting.”

Heading into 2007 and 2008, the Mets were seen as playoff contenders, not necessarily World Series favorites. Following the team’s World Series loss in 2015, the Mets lost Daniel Murphy but gained Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera. With Yoenis Cespedes back and the emergence of Michael Conforto, the 2016 Mets looked like they were ready to dominate.

Then, the injuries piled up. A trade for Jay Bruce saw the slugger slip into an epic slump. Somehow, someway the 2016 Mets bootstrapped together enough wins to host a Wild Card game, which they lost in excruciating fashion.

Heading into 2017, many thought, a fully healthy Mets roster could easily make a deep run in the playoffs. NOT. EVEN. CLOSE. On the final day of MLB’s OPENING MONTH, the 2017 Mets season ended. With the pitching staff already in disarray, Noah Syndergaard suffered a season-ending injury. It was all downhill from there.

The 2017 Mets didn’t even get out of APRIL and they were done.

Well, at least I have the Giants, right? The 2016 Giants defied most critics by going 11-5 and making the playoffs as a Wild Card thanks to Odell Beckham and a dominant defense. They got roundly trounced by Green Bay in the opening round.

Despite the ugly ending, Giants fans felt good about the team’s prospects in the 2017 season. Fix the anemic offense. Let the defense gel even more. Boom. Super Bowl.

The Giants front office inexplicably decided to draft a pass-catching tight end in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Of their remaining five picks, two might have paid off – Alabama defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and Clemson running back Wayne Gallman. The jury’s out on Davis Webb. Avery Moss has appeared in one game and has a shoulder injury. Adam Bisnowaty was cut before the season.

The Giants organization repeatedly told us to relax. The offensive line is fine. Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart are better! John Jerry is rejuvenated! We signed Pro Bowl wide receiver and future Hall of Famer Brandon Marshall to remedy our red zone woes! Forget Rashad Jennings, Paul Perkins is electric!

A little over a month into the 2017 season, the Giants are DONE.

After starting 0-2, we thought, well, the 2007 Giants were 0-2 and they won the Super Bowl.

After the last second loss to the Eagles in Week 3, we scrambled to find that a few other teams have started 0-3 and made the playoffs, just not in the past 19 years.

Then, the Giants lost another game in the final seconds, this time to Tampa and we thought, okay the 1992 San Diego Chargers went 0-4 and bounced back to win out. We can do that!

Who knew it would be the 2017 LOS ANGELES Chargers who would EMPHATICALLY drive the dagger through the heart of the 2017 Giants?

  1. Sterling Shepard out with a severe ankle injury.
  2. Brandon Marshall out with a severe ankle injury.
  3. Dwayne Harris out with a broken foot.
  4. Odell Beckham done for the season with a broken fibula.

At the end of the 27-22 loss to the Chargers, the Giants were lining up tight ends Jerell Adams and Rhett Ellison as wideouts.

0-16, here we come!

It doesn’t get any more ironic than the 2017 Giants. In the New York metropolitan area, the hapless Jets were expected to go 0-16. They’re now 3-2 and contending for the AFC East crown.

Maybe, just maybe, you could look back at the 1987 Giants or the 1991 Giants as being two of the more disappointing seasons. Coming off Super Bowl wins, how could a team that stayed intact (for the most part) fail in reaching the playoffs?

Maybe you could look at the 2001 Giants as a team that squandered a lot of opportunities? The 2002 Giants showing off their offensive prowess only to ease off the gas in the history-making Wild Card loss to the Niners? The 2008 Giants, an absolute juggernaut that laid an absolute egg in the Divisional loss to the Eagles? The 2012 Giants who finished with a better record than the previous year, yet missed the postseason?

Say what you will about those Giants teams, but at least you were still rooting for them after five weeks. I don’t know if I have the heart to watch the train wreck into a dumpster fire that is this season.

Nutjobs will come at me, bro. They’ll say I’m not a true fan. But, honestly, I have better things to do. The rest of this 2017 Giants season will be like watching someone perform a full-body surgery on a loved one without anesthesia. You into that torture porn? Fine. I’m gonna skip this Eli Roth bloodbath.
