Stand-up comedian Greer Barnes gave white women a very scary — but profitable — idea on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Stand-up comedian Greer Barnes has been professionally telling jokes on stage for a minute now. He’s not to be confused with West Virginia Mountaineer alum and former professional women’s soccer player of the same name. She’s a white woman. As you can see from funnyman Greer’s set on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Barnes is a black dude… who’s terrified of white women.
If you’re not familiar with Barnes, almost impossible if you’re a comedy fan, his credits include In Living Color, Chappelle’s Show, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Red Oaks (Amazon Video), and the new Pete Holmes HBO show Crashing (as seen in the video), which just got renewed for a second season.
That cameo on Crashing was soul-crushing. Barnes could have that same interaction with me non-stop for the rest of my life and I have the same reaction as Holmes. Just like a deer in headlights. Of course, Holmes weathered the storm and became a great comedian and I probably would’ve swam in a vat of vodka and erased the dream of earning a living making people laugh. I actually saw Barnes live as the opener for Louis C.K. in January 2015 at Madison Square Garden. It was right after the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris. That prompted Louis to write “Charlie Hebdo” on his shirt. From what I remember, Barnes was a hit.
In April 2015, Louis CK named Greer Barnes as one of the seven comedians to watch. In June of that year, Amanda Wicks of Paste Magazine ranked Barnes ninth on her list of the top 10 stand up comics who prove men can be funny, too.
