You Must Watch The Most Insane Battle Of The Year, Patrick Bateman v Superman

This maniacal movie mashup trailer I created hypothetically pits the utterly insane Patrick Bateman from American Psycho (played by Christian Bale) against the Man of Steel, Superman (played by Henry Cavill). It’s the monumental battle and nightmare matchup that many fans might’ve seen had Christian Bale continued as Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

I didn’t hate Batman v Superman as much as critics did. The content didn’t justify the running time, but it still had some incredible scenes.

I tend to side with many critics who panned Suicide Squad. What a wasted opportunity that was. There was little to no backstory or reasoning for including Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, or Killer Croc. Katana was a weird afterthought. All the heat came from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jared Leto’s Joker. Why not have more of that and less of the “throw ins”?

Harley Quinn and The Joker - Suicide Squad

As we all know, Bale stepped down from his role as the caped crusader following The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. The next year, news came that Ben Affleck would play Batman. The backlash was swift and severe. Some attempted to quell fears by citing similar hostile responses to the casting of Michael Keaton as Batman in the late ’80s and Heath Ledger as the Joker for The Dark Knight. Unlike those two, the general consensus is that Bat-fleck falls short.

In early February, a Forbes article speculated that Affleck “might continue slowly stepping away from [The Batman]” due to the exhaustion and frustrations of overcommitting to too many projects. Movie News Guide posited that Christian Bale could return. Then came opinion pieces about Affleck’s possible replacement. You can find suggestions at FanSided and ComicBook.com. Of the proposed candidates, Michael Fassbender, Jon Hamm, and Matt Damon are most intriguing.

Matt Miller of Esquire called The Batman “a total sh*tshow” after Affleck announced he wouldn’t be directing. Since then, it’s been confirmed Matt Reeves will helm direction and Affleck’s script has been re-written. The film will be a reboot of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy and will take place in Arkham Asylum. Joe Manganiello, who was in the running to be Superman before Henry Cavill was cast, will play the villain known as Deathstroke aka Slade Wilson.

That character’s name sounds familiar, right? Maybe, it’s because Deadpool aka Wade Wilson is a parody of Deathstroke / Slade Wilson. Deadpool has made many a list of biggest rip-offs in comic book history. But, as we’ve seen, things have worked out for Deadpool as he forged his own unique identity and a successful, genre-shattering franchise.

Following the news that a standalone Nightwing movie is in the works, Nerdist implied that if The Batman becomes Bruce Wayne’s swan song then the Batman movie legacy would live on with Nightwing. In the comics, the Nightwing character was Dick Grayson aka Robin. In the film world, the end of Dark Knight Rises implied Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Robin John Blake would take on the role. It appears the Grayson version of Nightwing will appear in The Batman.

Even if you think Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were disappointing, there’s still a ton of hype around what’s coming down the pike for the DC Extended Universe. Maybe the cure for what ails DC is a lil’ Patrick Bateman. But, what do I know? I have to return some videotapes.
